Giving Credit Where Credit Is Due

Rescuing Weimaraners is our mission and we have a great network of volunteers to help make that happen, but the financial support of generous givers is the life blood of our rescue. We do not have kennel facilities nor do we receive financial help from the government, so the cost to care for rescued Weims comes strictly from fundraising events and private donations… thank you, thank you, thank you.

Diego’s rescue story is a typical one… the call (or email) comes in about a Weimaraner that has been dropped off at an animal shelter. Many animal shelters will only keep a dog for a certain number of days before euthanizing, so we must act quickly to get the dog into our care. One of our Rescue Agents assesses the situation and coordinates retrieving the dog from the shelter and taking him to be checked out by a vet. Depending on the circumstances there can be vetting, spaying or neutering, micro-chipping, and transportation costs. On average, we spend upwards of $300 on each dog that comes into our care. However, more than half of the dogs that come into our program are not healthy and we must provide the treatment the original owners either didn’t choose to or could not afford. We pay to set broken bones, treat Heartworms, and all sorts of illnesses and injuries. Those costs can skyrocket over $1000 if the dog has been severely neglected and is in need of serious medical attention.

Sometimes, as in the case of Diego, who crossed over rainbow bridge on 02/17/09, the valiant efforts of our organization are not enough to save the life of a neglected dog because too much damage has been done before he reaches our arms… but that will NEVER keep us from trying as long as we have supporters like you!
